My Little Rule of Thumbs & Toes

>>>>> Thumbs, Toes …you know, the little rules I try to stick by when it comes to eating habits…

I’ve been advised by a faithful follower (you know who you are!) to start making this blog a lil’ more personal, and by personal she meant that I post more “me” on these pages. LOL, yes sounds kinda conceited right, well yea it is, haha. But with this said and a good laugh behind us I’m sharing a few helpful hints that I personally live by that relate to clean eating. Check it out >>>

  • I do my best to stay away from FRIED foods; Go grilled!

  • I avoid fatty salad dressings and sauces; Balsamic Vinaigrette is my favorite!
  • I drink as much water as I possibly can – aim for 6 glasses per day; Ugh, probably the most difficult task for me but I do. Especially important during the Summer season.
  • I do not add salt to my foods, only pepper and other spices; Cayenne Pepper is a trusted real goodie!
  • I do not eat after 8/9PM at night; Difficult yes, but the trick is to drink (fruit smoothies, water, hot teas) when hunger bites you passed 8pm! Note to self; it is common for most to mistake hunger for thirst.
  • I snack on only healthy foods if I ever get hungry; OK, so sometimes I cheat but my trusty lunchbox means I always have fresh fruit & dry fruits available!

  • I drink protein shakes; (sometimes as snacks between meals) but usually 30mins before my workouts
  • I am a realist; and so I incorporate a little ‘cheat snack’ at least 2-3 times a week! I’m adding this in because it’s important to be real with yourself. Avoiding the sugary treats you love completely only leads you down the binge path – don’t want that, so eat something on the black list a few times a week without the devil looming over your shoulder! 🙂

It’s no secret; Alicia Marie! Definitely my FAVORITE Fitness model in the whole wide worlddd!

With all jokes aside besides being beautiful I think she embodies top notch role model status and is a icon to the health and fitness industry. She has inspired and motivated thousands of women across the globe to grab a hold of their health, shake it up and put it into gear! Those words could have come from her mouth because that is exactly her type of attitude; vivacious, no excuses, tough love mentality to fitness!

Not only does she have this amazing body that defines the term symmetry (she’ll forever score a perfect 10 on my card) her personality and charisma is nothing less than amazing. You’ll pick this up immediately from her video posts.

Intellect, check! Alicia graduated from the University of Connecticut achieving her undergrad in Neuroscience with Honors and your girl hit that Dean’s List too. Plus, she was a national nominee for The Women’s Achievement Award! – I call that a slam junk!

Monthly Inspiration: Kenya Moore

Do yall remember Ms. Kenya Moore?! A film & TV actress, producer, model and author to date. You may remember her as being the very first African American to win Miss USA, crowned in 1990!

I was recently browsing online doing some research and came across a picture of Kenya. At first glance I didn’t recognize who she was but I didn’t need too…my first thought was damn, her body is incredible! So naturally I quickly looked her up and found some other amazing photographs.

I love showing respect when respect is called for. I have high admiration for women that make the right, healthy lifestyle choices to maintain a good bill of fitness. To me Kenya looks not only beautiful but healthy, well shaped, remains womanly with  well sculpted muscle definition, winning!

As women we should look to each other for positive motivation, inspiration and all that other good stuff that we often look for from men. No. Fail. Let’s impress ourselves, take on healthy lifestyles for the many health benefits and high self esteem simply because we all deserve to feel great about ourselves!

I share these images of Ms. Moore because they have encouraged me to stay in shape & eat clean, let it have the same impact on you!

Ab Work Out, Get Bikini Ready!

Are you wearing a two piece this summer?

Then I think you should take a look at this…

I recently changed up my Ab work out because I hit that dreaded plateau. It was time to shake things up a little so I have incorporated the Weighted Ball Crunch into all my core sessions.

This exercise is a fun ab blaster that I’m finding is working effectively for me, I’m definitely feeling a kick in the gut the following morning! I love this move because I am intensifying the exercise by having to stabilize myself evenly and well balanced on the ball. Not only am I working my rectus abdominis (muscle pictured below) I am also having to work my overall core, including my core-back muscles as well to keep myself from sliding side ways.

This exercise should be performed with focus (as should any exercise), concentrate on your breathing, your stability and the motion of lowering the free weight behind your head.

Exercise: The Weighted Ball Crunch

What’s this move working: Rectus Abdominis (mid-abs)

What Do You Need: Ball, free-weight dumbbell & your abs ready to rock!

Movement:


LEFT: Lie on stability ball holding a medicine ball or dumbbell with your arms above your head and close to your ears

RIGHT: Contract your abs and exhale while moving into a sit-up position, keeping the weight above your head. Inhale while returning to the start position and repeat.

I am currently using a 15 – 20lbs weight, however I would suggest starting with 10lbs should this exercise be new to you.

Did You Know: A study done at the Biomechanics Lab at San Diego State University found that crunches on a ball rank high for strengthening and toning the rectus abdominis.
